Maitland Station Precinct reVITALise Public Transport Vibrancy Grant

Nov 17, 2025

Goal

Maitland City Council, supported by Transport for NSW’s reVITALise Public Transport Precinct Vibrancy Grant, aims to transform the Maitland Station Precinct into a safer, more vibrant and welcoming gateway for the community. The project seeks to enhance people’s everyday walk or wheel to public transport by improving visibility, comfort, identity and activation across the first and last mile.

Solution

JOC Consulting delivered a place-based and community-driven engagement program to shape and refine the precinct concept. This included analysing early engagement insights, facilitating a Concept Testing Workshop and presenting draft ideas to participants for their input. Feedback focused on improving pedestrian safety, enhancing lighting, increasing seating variety, strengthening public art opportunities and designing for both day and night-time activation. These insights now guide Council’s detailed design approach and ensure the concept meaningfully responds to local needs and aspirations.

Outcome

The engagement process confirmed strong community support for the precinct direction and highlighted clear priorities for detailed design. Findings will help Council refine the concepts, progress to implementation and deliver targeted improvements that elevate safety, vibrancy and local identity. Over the next 12 months, interventions informed by community input will be installed across the precinct, creating a more inviting arrival experience and improving the daily journey to and from Maitland Station.
